There are many visual causes of reading difficulties, which may be treated using
optical/optometric techniques.
These visual problems may be categorised into the following:
1) Refractive conditions
2) Saccadal / tracking anomalies
3) Fixation difficulties
4) Poor suppression of physiological Diplopia
5) Pattern glare problems
6) Muscle imbalances
7) Accommodative / convergence effects
8) Visual over-stimulation
9) Stroboscopic / flicker effects
10) Fusional reserve problems
11) Pathological conditions
12) Developmental conditions
Some of these visual problems can be helped by the CTP Coil Ltd, Visual Tracking
Magnifier or Line Reader
How Do they Work?
These devices are the logical scientific progression of techniques already used by
the educational profession (i.e. flash cards, block down, coloured overlays etc.)
They significantly modify visual stimulus in a number of ways:
The pattern and magnification together reduces pattern glare dramatically. As
pattern glare is, perhaps, the principal cause of visually induced reading difficulties;
this can have a major effect on a large number of pupils.
Visual Saccades are easier for young readers
Fixation / Eccentric fixation is improved due to the band and background design
Visual over stimulation is reduced to manageable levels Stroboscopic effects are
reduced by the pattern and magnification (particularly modulation and flicker)
Poor suppression of physiological diplopia is improved by peripheral stimulus
reduction
